Maths Thinking Groups
One day each week our students work in their 'thinking groups' which are made up of students with varying stages in Maths. Our question today was:
Miss Breen had to bake a lot of cupcakes for the SPCA's cupcake fundraiser. She made five batches of pink cupcakes, two batches of blue cupcakes and three batches of green cupcakes. there were 12 cupcakes in each batch. How many cupcakes did she bake?
To begin with Miss Breen had to explain what a batch was! It is very important for our tamariki to learn Maths related vocabulary and well as numbers and strategies!
Each group worked through the answer together then shared back to the rest of the class. We have shown you how each stage answers the same question. If your child is stage 4, 5 or 6 you can see the development of thinking and use of strategies.
Stage 5: We used our addition to work out the answer. We worked out how many batches there were altogether then added the number of cupcakes inn each batch. We could do this by adding in twelves or we could use our knowledge of Place Value and add in tens first then add the ones to get our total of 120.
Stage 6: We use our multiplication and addition facts to work out how many cupcakes! We must know our multiplication facts in order to use this strategy!

Stage 4: We needed to draw the groups of twelve to help us work out how many we had altogether. When we got our answers, we added them together by counting on to give us our cupcake total!

Jump Rope for Heart Day - Friday 17th August
On Friday our class participated in Jump Rope for Heart to help raise some money for the Heart Foundation.
We had spent weeks practising how to skip properly and to learn the trickier moves such as side by side and face to face!
We had ten stations to visit during our morning and spent seven minutes at each station which had everything from single skipping, buddy skipping to Double Dutch and we even watched an awesome skipping championship video from YouTube.
We were tired by the end of it but it was great fun!!

Chasing the Bad Man by Havea
Once there was a bad man named Jason. Jason went to a gun station, he stole lots of guns without paying. The police came looking for Jason. The police found Jason and took the guns off him. They took Jason to jail. When they got to jail he took the keys off the police because they were'nt looking.
When he got out he sneaked out of the door and ran to the bank, stealing again. He stole $1000 from the bank. He bought food and drink to have for dinner. Suddenly when he was eating he heard a creepy sound behind a slimy tree, it was the....police. He raced to the Airport to go to another country. The country was called Australia. He lived happiliy ever after.

Bryan and Bobby come to visit!
Today we had a visit from Constable Bryan and his faithful companion Bobby the dog. Constable Bryan talked to us about the importance of identifying our belongings especially if they get lost or stolen.
Most expensive electronics and other household items have serial numbers which can be recorded to help the police identify items they recover. Here is the website which Constable Bryan told us about.
On this site you can list all the serials numbers of items in your house, for safe keeping! Pretty good idea even for us Teachers!

Explanation Writing
A Good Friend
What being a good friend means?
A good friend means when they help you and take care of you and walk you home. A good friend is like my friend Devyn she always takes care of me and she is always happy. Devyn is always nice. She plays with me whenever I'm on my own. Devyn comes to take care of me, that's why I think Devyn is a good friend. Do you knno when I come to school with no lunch Devyn shares her lunch with me. When ever I'm hurt Devyn takes me to the office. When this lady took me to this room I sat down on this bed and I stayed there. Devyn stayed with me so I didn't feel bored. When I was feeling better Devyn took me outside and she played with me. Devyn is the greatest friend I've ever had. I like it when Devyn looks after me. When ever people come up to Devyn she stands up and the people run away. The best thing I like about Devyn is that she is helpful.

What makes a Good Friend
Being a good friend means being helpful and kind to them. like if someone gets hurt you help them get better. Sometimes they can get injured and you have to help them. They will get better because they will say that you have been helping them all the time. So they will appreciate you for saving them.

Term 1 - Maths Thinking
Here are some photos of the ways in which some of our students solved Maths Word Problems in class. These can be tricky so we love having a go, we may not always get it correct but we love to talk about how we got our answer and help each other to fix up or think about other ways we can solve the problem.
Enjoy : )
