Our Police Visit

This morning we went to the Whare to learn what the Police do in our community from Constable Glenys.
First she showed us her uniform and tools and what they are used for. Our favourite tools were the baton and handcuffs! Next we watched a DVD called "Bryan and Bobby" which showed us what the Police do for us. We learned that the Police help people by teaching them how to be safe, how to do the right thing, by rescuing them, finding lost things or arresting people who break the law/rules.
Then when we had finished watching the DVD we discussed all the things that Police do to help us. After that Constable Glenys took us outside to see her Patrol Car. She turned on the lights to show us how they flash when the Police are going to an emergency and then we heard the siren, it was loud!
Finally Mya was lucky enough to get a chance to sit in the patrol car and use the loud speaker on the radio to call out instructions to the rest of the class, Miss Breen even got a "Hi". After the visit, most of our class want to be Police officers when we grow up.

It's hip to be a square!

This morning our wonderful Maths group - The Squares were demonstrating how to use their Stage 5 Doubles strategy and Making Ten to work out addition equations.

Here are some of our students explaining what they did in their group today:

Boston:

To work out 8+7 I use my doubles 7+7=14+1=15 or 8+8=16-1=15

 Boston's work

Daphne:

We can also use our Making 10 strategy to help us when we can't use our doubles. To work out 9+7 you go 9+1=10+6=16

Princess Mya and the Fairy God Mother

A million years ago there lived a princess called Mya. Mya had a fairy god mother called Daisy. Daisy had found some new princesses to look after. Daisy had given all the princesses a wish except for Mya. Mya always wanted a wish but Daisy wouldn’t give her a wish. Mya thought she would get a wish on her birthday. When it came to her birthday she never got the wish and she cried and cried, "Oh please someone help me, I never got a wish". Daisy looked in her magic bubble. Daisy saw in her magic bubble that Mya was crying in her tower. So Daisy wanted to give Mya a wish, but she couldn’t because she had no more magic sand to make wishes. So Daisy flew to heaven to ask the Lord, "Can I use some of your magic sand because I’ve run out and I’ve got one more princess to give a wish to". "Ok then I would like you to give the princess three wishes" said the Lord in a big voice". "Ok then I will" said Daisy. So the Lord gave Daisy a bag of magic sand and Daisy said, "Thank you". "You’re welcome" said the Lord. Daisy flew her wings up and down like a bird and flew home. When she was home she sang a special song to make a wish and Mya wished for a prince, to be married and to be rich. Mya got her wishes but before she could get married she needed a ring so she went to get a ring for her and for Prince Morgan. When Mya showed Morgan the ring he said, "we will get married next week" and they did. They lived happily ever after.
